Rajkot THEY joined Aptech in April 2000, expecting that their job prospects would be enhanced when the six-month-long fast-track course was complete. But that was not to be. Today, three students have filed a case (number 179/2001) against the private computer institute in the consumer court.

In April 2000, Aptech started its ACEP course with a batch of seven. However, majority of the students dropped out as the institute failed to provide quality education, students alleged. The end result? The course, whuch was supposed to end by October 2000, has not been completed till date.

Student Mahendra Tank said he and his batch-mates — Himanshu Shah and Narendra Kalotra — joined the ACEP course in April 2000. The fast-track course was supposed to end in six months but has still not ended, they complain.

The institute did not have qualified faculty, the students alleged, adding that they were just freshers who had completed their course and did not have any practical knowledge or training or experience. As a result, they complained, four of the seven students had dropped out. When a complaint was made, the director changed the faculty, but the new one was just as bad, they complained.

The three also said the institute failed to provide study material as well as laboratory facilities as and when needed. ‘‘Their labs are not well equipped, so practical sessions were also a problem.’’

Narendra Kalotra said, ‘‘The institute had made promises like 100 per cent job guarantee, but if the course is not completed than how will students get jobs?’’

He also alleged that the institute had promised three international certificates. ‘‘But six months later, they demanded and additional Rs 8, 000 if we wanted to get the Sun-Java and Microsoft certificates.’’

Rajesh Ramvani, ex-faculty at the centre, also spoke out in the students’ favour, stating that faculty were often asked to teach topics which they did not know about.

‘‘I was told to take Visual Basic with which I was not familiar.’’

Past students also complained. Vijay Ashara, who had enrolled himself in Web Master course, ‘‘They attracted students with lucrative schemes but did not provide quality education.’’

When contacted Barkha Kamania, center supportive officer, dismissed all charges. ‘‘It was students who did not want to complete the course. They did not even appear for the examination as they wanted to protest against the centre.’’

Dharmesh Kamania, director of the institute, admitted to the delay. ‘‘It should have been over by October 2000, it was continue till March 2001’’, he said.

Denying that the course was still not finished, he said the duration had been extended for the students’ benefit. ‘‘When 15 days were left for completion of the course, these students stopped attending sessions after the server crashed one day during the practicals, ’’ he said.

He also rubbished allegations that the faculty was not qualified. ‘‘At this centre, all the faculty are qualified, ’’ he stated.
